You are past the font loading stage when the blank document appears. Yours is cruft in one of the templates. My first guess would be Normal template. Please: 1) Quit all Microsoft applications. 2) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer, and drag them to your desktop.

Bog standard configuration, firefox and X.org installed from ports, all font settings are defaults. (8.0-CURRENT/amd64, not that it matters.) I've seen the same problem on OpenBSD since the switch to modular X11, and now that I've set up a new FreeBSD desktop box, it happens here, too. Here is an example snapshot:

Missing fonts
You will find that IE gets it too big on a high-res monitor (small pixels) set to use "Large Fonts" in the Windows Desktop. This is a bug in IE - it applies the same scaling correction twice. For WWWeb design, don't impose your monitor limits on other people. Leave font-size: 100%; and don't mess with it.
